Multi-wavelength switching in IP optical nodes adopting different buffering strategies

چکیده

The paper addresses the topic of long-haul optical networking for the provision of large-bandwidth IP services. A class of optical packet switching architectures is considered which adopts an arrayed wavelength grating device as packet router. The architecture performs slotted packet switching operations and fully exploits the wavelength routing capabilities by allowing multi-wavelength switching. Fiber delay lines are used to perform optical packet buffering, which accomplishes either input queueing or shared queueing. Here a thorough performance evaluation is carried out with different buffering configurations and the effect of various switch parameters on traffic performance is studied. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Traffic Performance of Buffering Strategies in All-Optical Nodes for IP Networks

In order to support the continuous growth of transmission capacity demand, optical packet switching technology is emerging as a strong candidate, promising to allow fast dynamic allocation of WDM channels, combined with a high degree of statistical resource sharing. This work addresses the comparison of input and shared buffering in an optical switch architecture based on an arrayed waveguide g...

Dimensioning of FDL Buffers for Optical Burst Switching Nodes

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising candidate for a more dynamic optical layer in the context of IP over WDM. Although buffering is not mandatory for the functionality of OBS, even simple FDL buffers can improve burst loss probability. In this paper, we first discuss principal buffer architectures and reservation schemes for fiber delay line (FDL) buffers. Then, we investigate key desi...

Towards Efficient Optical Burst-Switched Networks without All-Optical Wavelength Converters

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a promising switching paradigm to efficiently support Internet Protocol (IP) packets over optical networks, under current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology. The prospects of OBS networks would greatly benefit, in terms of cost and ease of implementation, from limiting the wavelength conversion capabilities at the network nodes. This paper present...

Multi-stage optical buffered switch for IP traffic

A novel architecture is proposed for future multi-terabit IP (internet protocol) routers, employing multiple cascaded stages of optical switching and buffering. WDM is used within the node to facilitate its operation. External synchronization is not required, and a void-filling algorithm is used to simplify hardware requirements. Packet priorities are not implemented in the current version of t...
